Heraldic Devices

Modern heraldry springs from the brightly coloured devices borne by knights in the early twelfth century on their shields in order to identify themselves in tournament and battle. But personal emblems and symbols have a far longer history than this, and were widely used by those in authority in ancient civilizations to denote ownership, authority or sanctity.
